Frequently Asked Questions

What is my child talking about? Podcasting?

Podcasting is not just a “fluffy” new way to teach language arts. Students are still learning the school district language arts curriculum and mastering the state standards, but the added component is that they are being asked to discern the important concepts and vocabulary used in science, math, and social studies class and to teach the content in a way that is understandable and engaging to an authentic web audience. The process includes writing story boards, conferencing about the content, editing, performing, analyzing the raw footage, combining the spoken word with photos, working in teams, meeting the class deadlines, and analyzing their work according to the rubric created by the class. Students are challenged to create their podcast using their Six Traits + 1 writing skills which include developing ideas and content, organization, word choice, voice, sentence fluency, conventions, and presentation. Additionally, students are striving to use their vocal abilities as an effective tool to portray a message.

What is podcasting?

The word "podcasting" is a combination of the words "iPod" and "Broadcasting." It is a way for people to be able to subscribe to audio content over the Internet, much like you subscribe to a print magazine. The best way to explain it is to say that you choose what podcasts you want to be delivered and downloaded to your computer, just like you choose what magazines you have delivered to your mailbox.   You can listen to the podcasts you subscribe to either from your computer, iPod, or other MP3 player. See Wisconsin State Standards for English.

What does it mean to be a Coulee Kid?
Coulee is a French term for hills and valleys. The area of Wisconsin we live in is called the Coulee Region. We take the name Coulee Kids because our pod, or learning group, is a school within a school. We are called School in the Coulee, because our teachers believe that what we learn should be relevant and meaningful to a child living in the Coulee Region. Learn More and More. Our podcast is titled, A School in the Coulee Podcast, but over the years, the nickname Coulee Kids evolved. We liked it, so we kept it!
