            <title>Pennies For Peace - Kalyn and Kylie</title>
            <description><![CDATA[<p>The Coulee Kids took on the challenge of becoming positive, contributing global citizens when they decided to raise money for Pennies For Peace. Our classes went to see the author of THREE CUPS OF TEA, Greg Mortenson, and we heard how his organization was making a difference for children in Afghanistan and Pakistan by building schools and equipping them with educational supplies. In the process, we studied current news topics of the Greater Middle East and learned that children who are educated about health issues are less likely to die of disease, and kids who can read and write are less likely to become involved in terrorist activities. We felt that by helping to build a school in this area of the world, we could touch other kids’ lives and make a big difference in our world. We organized a penny drive at both our school and a local elementary school, State Road. This podcast was something we created to share with other kids so that they too can make a difference in our world.</p>

We had already learned about basic photographic composition, and our assignment was to look for strange acts of nature that caused us to wonder. It was an enjoyable day that sparked our enthusiasm for writing.</p>

Our teachers interjected lessons on word choice and how to revise our work as we worked through the entire writing process.             <title>Incredible!  A Frog Dissection</title>
            <description><![CDATA[<p>The Coulee Kids have been studying amphibians. These unique creatures live a “double life” as they rely on the land and the water to grow from an egg to a tadpole to a froglet to an adult frog. Because amphibians depend so heavily on land and water for survival, they are excellent ecological indicators telling us if something is right or wrong with our environment. </p><p>As we explored further into the Phylum Chordata, we found out that frogs and humans aren’t so different than we originally predicted. Actually, they have very similar body systems with comparable organs and tissues as we have in our human body. </p><p>In this Coulee Kids podcast, you will hear about each frog body system and its correlating forms and functions. You will see a close-up Proscope photo of our frog dissection, which allowed us to closely examine each system first hand. </p><p>To add a clever literary twist to our scientific study, we added interjections, oh my, and appositives, phrases which clarify the noun. This was an enjoyable challenge to bring together both language arts skills and science knowledge.</p>]]></description>

            <description><![CDATA[<p>The Coulee Kids have been truly inspired by the devotion of the many moms, dads, uncles, aunts, brothers, and sisters who work endlessly serving in the United States military. It is their dedication to our freedoms and rights, which makes us proud to be Americans! We wanted to thank our soldiers, but we weren’t sure what to say in our letters. Ben, one of the kids in our class, asked his dad to come speak to us. Ron is a member of the Wisconsin National Guard, and since he visited us, he has been called to active duty in Iraq.</p>

<p>When Ron talked to our class, he mentioned that when he was in Iraq last time, he enjoyed hearing about what was going on at home. He said the every day things that we take for granted, like the snow and sleet that fell last night, the mayoral race, or just what we did over the weekend were all topics that soldiers would enjoy hearing about. He stressed the importance of using correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation in our correspondence. This gave us an idea. If we put our letters and thoughts into a podcast, we could not only write to the military personnel that the Coulee Kids’ students know and love, but to every soldier!</p>

Participants brainstormed initial reactions to the poem including theme, figurative language use, impact of the title, personal meaning, and more.  Then, they organized a paragraph sharing their thoughts.  Students practiced performing their written word and called our free voice mail service JConnect (http://home.j2.com). <p>In a live poetry slam, it is the audience’s obligation to respond to the poet in some way whether clapping, cheering, booing, or snapping their fingers.
